Summary/Abstract: The underlying concept of an optional course derives from the course leader’s scholarly interests, allowing him to take an original approach to course contents, particularly in a course based on an interdisciplinary subject. However, an optional course ought not to be set to merely disseminate extended knowledge; from the first planning instant, it needs to be directed towards the development of the specific competences it is envisaging. An optional course for gymnasium is developed and implemented differently from a lyceum one. Our suggestions concern a design pattern for courses built around literary and cultural personalities, and an open structure for functional literacy courses.
