Summary/Abstract: The proposed discourse offers a glimpse into 100 year history of German Volkshochschulen (VHS) – community learning centres, that are tackling health as an important dimension of human life. Alongside with professional training, communication and integration courses, creativity and arts, culture and society, health education is one of cardinal and at the same time generic areas of the extended offer of VHS. It is directed to a big variety of target groups and proposes tens and each community learning centre usually proposes tens or even hundreds of courses from traditional gymnastics and ball-sports to Zumba, dances, breathing courses or walking exercising and much more. To enhance German approach to health education, other two perspectives are referred to: one is Korean argument that lifelong learning, including health education, increases the level of happiness and another point of view is a Portuguese insight that health education should be treated as important as literacy and numeracy, if we really want to really change the paradigm of budgets overspent for treatment and heavily underspent on anticipation of health deterioration.
