Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes orthographic issues surrounding the spelling of the names of ethnographic groups along the proper noun – appellative. It highlights the complex relationship between extralinguistic reality and its orthographic representation in the light of established orthographic rules. It illustrates the inconsistency of linguistic practice, while at the same time pointing out the need to take due account of the extralinguistic contexts of the issue under consideration (the historical background of the relevant population groups, the question of their identity, including self-identification, the socio-political circumstances surrounding the majority’s attitude towards them, etc.). In conclusion, a possible solution is proposed, in the form of a recommendation, on how to approach these types of names in practice and in lexicography, which does not currently capture many of these terms.
