Summary/Abstract: The article presents a critical review of scholarship on geri-action, understood as a cycle within contemporary action cinema centred on ageing protagonists and genre stars. Its main aim is to develop an original typology of three strategies for managing the ageing of the action hero: compensating for the signs of ageing and the limitations brought on by age, accepting old age as an element of the plot and character development, and technologically masking the signs of ageing. This typology synthesises dispersed scholarly findings and enables comparison between different ways of representing age, embodiment, and agency in action cinema. The article argues that geri-action is neither merely a nostalgic return to the ‘hard body’ model of the 1980s action cinema nor simply a symptom of its exhaustion, but a cycle that reveals the tension between the actor’s biological body, the cultural memory of their star image, and the demands of contemporary cinematic spectacle.
