Summary/Abstract: Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly changing teaching, learning and assessment practices in higher education, generating both educational opportunities and concerns regarding the quality and integrity of the learning process. The study explores students’ perceptions of the benefits, challenges/risks and expectations regarding the integration of GenAI in education and synthesizes the results through a SWOT analysis. Data were collected from 373 students in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, at the beginning of the 2nd semester of the 2025–2026 academic year, through three open-ended questions. The responses were analysed thematically and quantified by the frequency of mentions. The results indicate that students mainly associate GenAI with quick access to information, supporting learning and autonomy, improving understanding and personalizing the educational process. At the same time, the main perceived risks concern AI dependency and the reduction of critical thinking, erroneous or unverified information, as well as issues of academic integrity, ethics and confidentiality. Students’ expectations focus in particular on the development of AI skills, responsible integration and the existence of clear rules. The SWOT analysis highlights a cautious and conditional orientation toward AI integration: students recognise the educational value of the technology, but consider that it should complement, not replace, the cognitive activity of the student and the pedagogical role of the teacher. The results support the need for AI literacy, clear institutional policies and the adaptation of assessment practices for a responsible integration of AI in higher education.
