Summary/Abstract: This article examines the scope and limitations of Edward T. Hall’s high- and low-context model from a relational and situated perspective, bringing it into dialogue with research on Romania and selected Latin American contexts. Drawing on Spencer-Oatey’s rapport management framework and contributions from cross-cultural social psychology, historical pragmatics, and sociocultural pragmatics, it distinguishes between two levels of analysis: a sociocultural level and an interactional-relational level, mediated by relational expectations. The studies considered show, through different materials and research traditions, how sociocultural frameworks become relevant in specific communicative practices. Without proposing a direct empirical comparison between Romania and Latin America, the analysis highlights the limitations of applying broad cultural categories to individual behaviour. It concludes that Hall’s model retains heuristic value when integrated into an approach attentive to relationships, situated interaction, and cultural heterogeneity.
