Summary/Abstract: Discussions about interpretation span two poles: freedom, complete liberty, invention, and discipline, clearly defined boundaries, and rules. Theoretical justifications for various solutions have their strengths and weaknesses. Their diversity makes teaching interpretation in schools challenging, as it is not easy to find a happy medium between these poles. This article briefly presents some theoretical concepts, and its aim is to propose a form of school interpretation that would both open students to a lively, personal, experienced reading experience and teach them to recognize boundaries that should not be crossed in the process of reading a work. Interpretation will be treated as a way of understanding not only a specific text but also reality. Two works by Zbigniew Herbert exemplify the ambiguity of texts and the various interpretive paths.
