Summary/Abstract: The following article centers on the fact that the novel Cat’s Cradle written by Kurt Vonnegut appealed so greatly in the first years after its publication to the American Counter-Culture Movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s. The premise is that in his work the author takes on a distinctly anti-war position and rejects the faith in science that was characteristic of traditional American society. What the present article will endeavor to show is that, while on the surface one might consider that the writer’s sentiment of protest and rejection are made manifest simply through the events that take place in the novel, Kurt Vonnegut in fact transmits his ideas in a more subtle manner, by turning his characters into monsters.
