Summary/Abstract: How does someone entering or aiming to work at a Hungarian museum institution become a museologist or museum professional? Over the 200-year history of Hungarian museums, the backgrounds of founders and operators have varied widely. At the start of the 20th century, professionals laying the foundations for museum collections often came from careers in teaching or public administration. Later, in Budapest first and in the provinces from the 1960s, historians, archaeologists, ethnographers, and art historians entered the field with university degrees. Their academic training focused on humanities research rather than various practical domains of museum work, or methods of knowledge transfer – with librarians and restorers as the main exceptions whose tasks were distinctly practical. Throughout most of the 20th century, higher education institutions focused on training humanities scholars and teachers, prioritizing academic research over practical skills. To resolve this contradiction within an expanding museum system, practical knowledge was long transmitted internally between staff members within the institutions themselves. Nevertheless, the shifting attitude at the turn of the 21st century and new types of museum tasks needed a structural change. Driven by museum adult education, university specializations in museology, and student fieldwork through OTKA research, higher education began integrating applied museology. This study presents current pathways to becoming a museologist and researcher in the Hungarian museum sector.
