COOPERATION OF UNIVERSITIES AND COUNTRY HOUSE MUSEUMS ORGANIZED BY THE CENTRAL DIRECTORATE OF COUNTRY HOUSE MUSEUMS IN HUNGARY

Summary/Abstract: Country house museums belong to a distinctive category of museum institutions that, by nature, occupy a peripheral position within the museum profession and often operate without professional museum staff. One of the principal responsibilities of the Central Directorate of Country House Museums is to provide professional support for these institutions. An important element of this work is to raise awareness among and motivate professionals working in museum-related disciplines to engage with country house museums. It is important to begin this process during higher education, as the Carpathian Basin is home to more than one thousand country house museums, and most students have some form of personal or local connection to them. The Central Directorate seeks to make work in country house museums attractive to students from different disciplines through a range of model projects. For conservators, this takes place through the Object Protection and Museology Model Project, in cooperation with the Department of Conservation at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts; for architecture students, during the Folk Architecture Summer Camp; and for ethnography students, through the Country House Museum Practice. During these programmes, students can try out the work processes they have learned at university in a country house museum environment, and thus, in addition to gaining practical experience, they also develop a realistic picture of the profession.
