Summary/Abstract: The first appearance of Christianity was in the Syriac Orient from the Jewish communities, being largely independent of the Greco-Latin churches of the West and with a powerful spirituality born from the Semitic tradition rather than that of classical Greece and Rome. In a continuous struggle with the Zoroastrianist dualism of the Persian Empire and enduring persecutions, the Syriac Church paradoxically progressed, eventually becoming highly centralised and organised. Syrian theology, with its richness of meanings and concepts, can always be a particularly enticing element for any researcher in the field.
