Summary/Abstract: Placing a person in a penitentiary institution or remand centre means the loss of one of the most valued and fundamental human values - freedom. This is an action of the state based on the applicable system of legal regulations, constituting a specific response to a committed crime. The term "penitentiary units" covers both penitentiary institutions, where finally convicted persons are held, and remand centres, where persons suspected of committing a crime are detained. The security of inmates is guaranteed by legal provisions such as the Executive Penal Code and other legal acts, with the prison administration playing an important role in maintaining the security of inmates under conditions of penitentiary isolation. This article presents issues relating both to the legal basis and normative regulations governing the functioning of penitentiary units, and to the practical implementation of the actions of Prison Service officers and their results, in order to ensure an optimal level of security for inmates.
