Summary/Abstract: Societies are ontologically unstable entities, and therefore must activate defence mechanisms (world-interpreting narratives) that protect them from disintegration. Ideologies are such mechanisms. Ideologies, as well as other lesser social interpretive schemes (cults, doctrines), are, however, not intellectual constructs dependent on humans. Once created, they live "a life of their own," evolving and, through this evolution, producing constructs that often turn against humans themselves. Fundamentalism and its emotional realisation - fanaticism - is one such construct. The author, using mainly the method of phenomenological analysis, attempts to present the path that led to the emergence of these phenomena, as well as to answer the question of their psychological genealogy and the conditions under which they may pose a threat.
