Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present the opinions of Polish and Norwegian students preparing to serve in penitentiary units regarding the competences that prison staff should possess. The research, using a diagnostic survey method, was conducted between August and October 2021 as part of Module 2, "Modernisation of the Prison Service training system," of the "Pilot Penitentiary Teams" project financed by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism. Learning about the students' position reflects the image of the officer's profile based on internships completed in penitentiary units and a cycle of theoretical and practical classes. The research results also indicate differences in the perception of important competences, which may have cultural and systemic roots, i.e. related to the application of the concept of dynamic security in the Norwegian penitentiary system.
