Summary/Abstract: The article presents the contribution of Antoni Jaźwiński and General Józef Bem to the development and popularisation of a teaching method known in several European countries in the first half of the 19th century. Under difficult conditions of emigration, both officers showed broad interests and determinedly worked on implementing solutions to facilitate the teaching of history, and later other subjects. The main aim of their search was to find ways to improve the memorisation of information. It becomes clear why the adjective "mnemonic" was eventually added to the initial name "the Polish method". Over the course of more than a decade, the solutions proposed by Jaźwiński underwent a series of modifications, yet the basis of teaching remained the use, in the cognitive process, of a hundred-field table. This so-called Jaźwiński table was refined through the efforts of J. Bem. The solutions developed by the general found application in French education, and Jaźwiński's materials were also used in Russian schools. Both collaborators also found a circle of followers and continuators who popularised this effective teaching method both in Polish lands and overseas.
