Summary/Abstract: The Orthodox Church is by definition a Church of service, in its doubtful aspect: the service of God and the service of humankind. Because the ministry is related to the communitarian, ecclesial aspect of the Christian life, the Christian community is realised as „ecclesia” not only through confession of faith and worship, but also through worship and by service to the world. Service is, in fact, the expression of the inner life of the Christian and of the Church in their relation to the world. The new-testamental grounds regarding philanthropy also highlight its sociological and eschatological perspective. For every believer, philanthropy is an essential factor in achieving salvation and, at the same time, a criterion of universal judgement. Philanthropy has salvific value only when the perpetrator, feeling the presence of Christ in his fellow man, does not consider himself the sole perpetrator but co-author with Him in the deed committed.
