Summary/Abstract: This study aims for a brief analysis of the manner in which St Athanasius I, the patriarch of Constantinople, constructs his epistles addressed to Emperor Andronikos II. The use and familiarity with Greek culture, the Old and the New Testament, or the patristic theology is evident at a first reading of the letters, and the present article analyses especially the prophetic logic that the patriarch proposes to the emperor – based on a recurrent Old Testament theme, revealed Christologically in the New Testament preaching – in the stake represented by repentance as a transition from catastrophe to redemption in the spiritual and mundane itinerary of the Christian and implicitly of the whole Empire.
