Summary/Abstract: The study outlines the important contributions of Nikolay Iv. Nikolaev to the discussion about the true Bulgarian church singing, which unfolded from the 1890s to the mid-20th century. His role in it is decisive, although not always obvious due to the fact that he does not join the polemic in the periodical press with his publications. However, his purposeful and consistent musical and public activity makes him one of the main ideologists and drivers in it. His contribution is undeniable in terms of searching for and publishing the chants from the repertoire of Bolgarskiy Rospev, in promoting and upholding the idea of their introduction into the liturgical practice in place of Eastern singing, in turning them into one of the directions of development of the new authorial polyphonic church musical creativity. Highlights of his work as a church conductor and as chairman of the Bulgarian Musical Union are presented, in which he unwaveringly pursued the idea of reforming Bulgarian church music.
