Summary/Abstract: The issue of women in penitentiary isolation is not often addressed in academic studies. The extensive penitentiary literature usually relates to various aspects of the execution of imprisonment with respect to the prison population as a whole, of which almost 95% are men. This means that gender rarely constitutes an analytical category in the relevant literature. The growing number of offences committed by women and the increasing population of imprisoned women fulfilling the function of mothers prompt the undertaking of this subject on an academic basis. The subject of the article is the execution of imprisonment with respect to pregnant women and mothers with children. An analysis focused on legal aspects, in particular penal and penitentiary aspects, as well as resocialization aspects, has made it possible to present the specific nature of the treatment of pregnant convicted women and mothers staying with their children under penitentiary isolation. The article constitutes an attempt to present a dualistic vision of the prison as an environment shaping the parent–child relationship. The controversial issue of pregnant convicted women, and children staying together with mothers serving a sentence of imprisonment, remaining in penitentiary isolation, is presented taking into account environmental factors, emphasizing both their positive and negative significance for the proper course of the resocialization of prisoners, their capacity for positive social readaptation in the future, and for the development of children staying in prison facilities.
