Summary/Abstract: This article aims to explore and describe the types of sources and methods used in studying the family histories of research fellows affiliated with the Kola Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The studied families included those with members who have worked at the Kola Science Centre (formerly the Kola Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences) across two to three generations. The study focused on the memorial culture associated with the preservation of memory within these families. Despite increasing scholarly interest, many aspects related to the memorial culture among the families of research fellows remain underexplored. Notably, socio-cultural characteristics of this category of families are predominantly examined from a gendered perspective. Using the methods outlined in this article, the author attempts to identify the commemorative practices employed by these families to preserve and transmit their family history to future generations. The research is based on the results of the author’s fieldwork, including interviews and analysis of family archives. A comprehensive analysis of documents, oral sources, visual materials, and multi-faceted sources reflecting individual events was used to reconstruct the family histories. The findings reveal that all the informants’ families have engaged in commemorative practices aimed at maintaining and passing down their family history. An important factor contributing to the success of this research was the inclusion of two generations of the author’s own family within the community studied, which facilitated interactions with the informants and supported the implementation of the principle of trustful cooperation among the participants in the anthropological study.
