Summary/Abstract: The article traces the origins of educational book publishing, with a focus on teaching Karelian children the basics of the Orthodox faith, as well as reading and writing skills. Drawing on literary and archival sources, the study summarizes the development of educational books, highlighting their connections to similar publications in other regions and national contexts. The study examines the content, structure, and design of these textbooks, as well as methods used to teach reading. It traces the evolution of educational materials from catechisms to standalone textbooks, a shift driven by the expansion of secular knowledge, advances in printing technology, and the incorporation of illustrative elements. The article also identifies church and public institutions, as well as individuals involved in creating these books. It emphasizes the significant influence of Orthodox clergy and rural teachers in their development, on the one hand, and the contributions of educational organizations and institutions, on the other hand. The research specifically addresses the history of educational literature for schools located within the modern borders of the Republic of Karelia, projected onto a map of Karelian-populated volosts and uyezds of the Olonets and Arkhangelsk provinces.
