Summary/Abstract: Karnataka occupies a unique position in the religious history of the Indian subcontinent. Few regions have nurtured, protected, and disseminated as many diverse religious traditions while simultaneously preserving an atmosphere of philosophical dialogue and cultural coexistence. From the ancient Jain monuments of Śravaṇabeḷagoḷa to the flourishing Tibetan Buddhist settlements of the present day, from the Advaita Vedāntic center at Śṛṅgeri to the Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedantic haven at Melukoṭe, from the rise of Vīraśaivism under Basavaṇṇa to the Dvaita Vedāntic chief spiritual center at Uḍupi, Karnataka has continuously served as a meeting ground for religious innovation and spiritual scholarship. The state has also been shaped by Sikh, Islamic, and Christian traditions, each contributing distinctive elements to its religious landscape. This paper examines the remarkable diversity of Karnataka’s religious heritage and argues that its greatest legacy lies not merely in the antiquity of its sacred monuments but in its sustained capacity to nurture multiple faith traditions across more than two millennia. The paper is based on the thematic points contained in the supplied document while expanding them into an academic discussion supported by standard historical scholarship.
