Summary/Abstract: This article is a study of manifestations of women’s identity, as practiced in annual and familial rituals during the period between courtship and marriage. Identity – understood through the term of “parallelism” – refers to specific ritual activities that reveal women’s similarity to mythical figures depicted in the songs. Two fundamental categories – identity and similarity – are considered in the context of the etymology and semantics of the Proto-Slavic lexicon and ritual texts of oral tradition. The analysis reveals specific aspects of “becoming like/ similar” to mythical figures and the elements of mythical-ritual scenarios associated with them.
