Summary/Abstract: This article discusses Teodor Szabłowski’s novel Emancypantki warszawskie, published in 1898 and focused on the artistic bohemian community. The author and the novel have not been the subject of any prior research. This is significant because it is a socalled roman à clef, and its protagonist was based on Władysław S. Reymont. Szabłowski dedicated the novel to his wife, who was also… Reymont’s fiancée at the time. This article attempts to reconstruct Szabłowski’s biography and his literary and journalistic activities. The figures of Warsaw artists appearing in Emancypantki warszawskie (W. Wolski, A. Kamieński, A. Lange, J. Lemański, A. Kurzawa, W. Tracewski, B. Chrzanowski, J. Waśniewski, A. Mieszkowski and Szabłowski himself) were also deciphered, which, together with basic biographical information about these people, may constitute a starting point for further research in the area of research on artistic life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
