Summary/Abstract: The text presents Mikhail Katkov’s views on the Russian monarchical system of governance— autocracy. It is based on an analysis of Mikhail Katkov’s articles published in Moskovskie Vedomosti and the periodical Russkiy Vestnik, which were issued in Saint Petersburg in the second half of the 19th century. In this context, the author’s stance on the political and legal status of the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church is also discussed, situating it within the realities of the January Uprising of 1863, which spanned the western provinces of the Russian Empire and the territory of the Kingdom of Poland.
