Summary/Abstract: In the Sinop region, weddings are generally considered complete with the bride and groom’s commitment to marriage, but they continue with blessing and complementary rituals lasting approximately a month after the wedding. These practices begin with the veil ceremony held the day after the wedding and continue with various traditional practices such as distributing the dowry, visiting family and neighbors. Furthermore, if it is believed that the bride and groom are bound by a bond, various practices are employed to resolve this bond during this period. The veil day practices generally begin with the morning call to prayer; they conclude with the hanging of the veil, the groom’s breakfast, the cutting of halva (a sweet dessert), the display of the dowry, the distribution of the dowry, the bride-water-bread ritual, the serving of food, and various entertainment activities. This study identifies and describes post-wedding traditions in the Sinop region through field research. Some of these practices, which incorporate many elements of the ancient Turkic belief system, are evaluated comparatively with similar traditions found throughout the Turkic world. The study also includes vocabulary used within the context of post-wedding traditions and identified during the compilation process. A total of 70 headwords, in their forms as used in the Sinop dialects, have been added to the Turkish language. Of these words, 51 are not included in the Compilation Dictionary, 8 are included in the Compilation Dictionary but carry different meanings, 7 are included in the Compilation Dictionary but were not compiled from the Sinop region, and 4 are words that are already present in the Compilation Dictionary.
