Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to show how a lesser-known literary work can become an important mobilizing impulse that helps overcome a period of artistic and social stagnation, such as the era of “normalisation” in the 1970s. Ján Buzássy’s book Rozprávka [The fairy tale] (1975) has been on the margins of interest in the history of Slovak literature; attention has focused on the author’s works that, from the moment of their publication (in the case of published books) or their disclosure (in the case of unpublished manuscripts), represented a more significant contribution—both thematically and poetologically—to the contemporary development of literature (Pláň [Plain] [1970] 2012, Krása vedie kameň [Beauty leads the stone] 1972, or Ľubovník [Amber touch and heal] 1979). An intraliterary reason for the lack of reflection by literary studies was that, as a verse drama and a text intended for both adult and child audiences—and one that also included popularizing elements—it tended to fall more on the periphery of potential research than at its centre. Through examining the historical contexts of published books, unpublished manuscripts, and textual interpretation, reveals how the book Rozprávka became an unexpected catalyst through which Buzássy overcame his own creative crisis and found a way and a space for his further work even amid the adverse conditions of the repressive period of the 1970s.
