Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the public activities of Alexander Matuška (1910–1975) in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It traces Matuška’s movement between engagement, politics and culture in order to outline the political and institutional contexts of his public role at the onset of Normalisation. The analysis draws on three complementary bodies of material: archival documents held at the Archives of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, the Slovak National Archives in Bratislava, and the Literary Archives of the Slovak National Library in Martin; selected periodical contributions by Matuška from the period under examination; and secondary sources, particularly reflections on Matuška’s role in contemporary culture. Attention is focused on Matuška’s specific interventions, the external circumstances surrounding them, and the situations in which his public activities came into contact with the emerging policies of Normalisation. Central to the analysis is the question of continuity, both of his own creative work and of Slovak culture more broadly, under the conditions of a federalised and normalised Czechoslovak state.
