Summary/Abstract: In the second half of the Normalisation period (1979–1988), several syntheses of literary history were published in Slovakia that also addressed developments in the most recent literature after 1969. On this basis, the study examines the intervention of contemporary ideology in the process of historicising recent or still ongoing literary developments. All the works analysed are framed ideologically by a universal Marxist conception of development, in the form in which it was concretised at the time in the ideological document Poučenie z krízového vývoja v strane a spoločnosti po XIII. zjazde KSČ (Lessons from the crisis development in the Party and society after the 13th Congress of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, 1970). The study identifies the relationship between this paradigmatic and universally binding document and the scholarly, educational and pedagogical outputs of contemporary literary-historical research. This was a one-sided dependence that extended beyond the introductory sections of the publications to the narrative level of their interpretation (the construction of the plot is derived directly from Poučenie) and to the selection and evaluation of individual literary figures within these syntheses.
