Summary/Abstract: Research in Portugal found dissonance between the perceptions of news producers and consumers regarding the integrity of journalism, and a zone of consonance: a free press is essential to democracy. Journalists perceive their work as observing professional standards and being compliant with the legal and regulatory environment. News consumers reveal skepticism and limited awareness of the legal and production processes of the media, leading to generalised distrust of all media.Research in Portugal found dissonance between the perceptions of news producers and consumers regarding the integrity of journalism, and a zone of consonance: a free press is essential to democracy.
