THE DIOCESE OF BACĂU AS REFLECTED IN THE ACCOUNTS OF CATHOLIC MISSIONARIES

Summary/Abstract: In this paper, I aim to present a subject of interest for the history of Romanian spirituality, focusing on the image of the Diocese of Bacău. This will be acomplished through the accounts of the missionary Marco Bandini, following the general visitation of the Roman-rite Catholic churches in the province of Moldavia. The corpus of texts consists of the translations of Marco Bandini’s accounts, published in the editions of V.A. Urechia, Traian Diaconescu, Alexandrescu Dersca-Bulgaru and Paul Cernovodeanu. My purpose is to reflect upon these texts in order to reconstruct an image of the internal conflicts within the diocese. The analysis seeks to demonstrate that the Diocese of Bacău did not function as a stable and institutionalized space, but rather as a territory situated on the border of external political conflicts.
