Summary/Abstract: About the šarkan and the bač. The herpetonym šargan/šaran 'Vipera ammodytes' and the toponyms derived from it are characteristic of a large part of the historical area of the Serbian language. There are also very few confirmations for the variant šarkan. This phonetic variant underwent its transformation on the slopes of the Carpathians, where Serbian herders arrived from the 12th to the 16th centuries and brought with them a new culture, a new language and, of course, the lexeme šargan, which changed both its form and its meaning, and spread across West Slavic languages, and even reached Hungarian (sarkany). These shepherds are known in historiography as the Gorali. There are indications that the word šargan was widely used among the Serbian population in the territory of present-day Hungary before the arrival of the Hungarians in the Pannonian Basin.
