Summary/Abstract: The Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878 led to historical ruptures and to the experience of painful and difficult conditions in the Northeastern Anatolia region. The military defeats, occupation, and migration phenomena experienced in the Kars and Ardahan region created a deep psychological and social upheaval among the people of the region. The process was not limited only to a change of sovereignty; at the same time, it caused the reconfiguration of the administrative order, social relations, and economic functioning. Within these changes, minstrels, bards, and poets attempted to prevent historical memory from being lost in moments of chaos by updating the past within the present. In order to carry society safely into the future, they mobilized cultural memory and emerged with guiding and time-founding roles in moments of crisis. In the spaces where history is remembered and kept alive in times of crisis, Şenlik, reaching his own existence and the values of his selfhood, reconstructs collective identity and transfers it to the future. During the period in which he lived, Şenlik assumed the function of a “mythic founder” in response to the character tests faced by society. In this study, the poems produced by Şenlik during the occupation period, also known as the forty years of dark days, are interpreted within the conceptual framework of Korzybski’s “time-binder” and Foucault’s “parrhesiastes”.
