TRADITION AND MODERNITY IN THE WORKS OF VASILIJE MOKRANJAC

Summary/Abstract: The composer’s relationship with musical folklore is highly specific; the elements of musical nationalism incorporated into Mokranjac’s creative process gradually became an important constructive element of his works. Discreet hints of folkloric inspiration coloured many of Mokranjac’s compositions, and their subsequent popularity contributed to the fact that his entire oeuvre came to be recognized primarily through them, while works composed in the national spirit are most often identified with a “typically Mokranjac-like” sound.
