Summary/Abstract: The Great Anonymous, or God, created the world "out of burning cruelty" toward His own creative capacities. Displaying profound demonic characteristics, the Great Anonymous deliberately diminishes His own cosmogenic potential. This act of self-inflicted creative mutilation condemns humanity eternally to non-mystery, non-revelation, and non-absoluteness. In Master Manole, Blaga advances the thesis of the demonic nature of creation through the tragic condition of the creator. Assisted by Bogumil, Manole comes to understand that although the church is a symbol of light, it cannot be built without paying tribute to darkness; and that tribute is a blood sacrifice. As Mircea Eliade emphasizes in Mephistopheles and the Androgyne, divine polarity manifests itself in the deepest structure of divinity, so that God exists in complementarity with the Devil. This God–Demon polarity permits Mira to become incarnated within the church, where she passes from a body of flesh to a body of stone. This "body of glory" also reveals a mysterious architectural maternity, for it is Mira who gives birth to the church. Female sacredness, eternally life-generating, is redirected from the child to the stone, while Manole—the sacrificing man, the absolute artist—casts himself into the light.
