ANALYSIS OF THE WORK “GRAPE HARVEST” OF NEŞET GÜNAL WITH ICONOGRAPHIC AND ICONOLOGICAL METHODS

Summary/Abstract: This research aims to analyse Neşet Günal’s work “Grape Harvest”, which has an important place in the history of Turkish painting, using Erwin Panofsky’s iconographic and iconological work criticism method. In Günal’s paintings, the characteristics, images and symbols of the geography and culture in which the Anatolian people lived were depicted in a realistic style. The work titled Grape Harvest is one of the first works Günal made after returning to Turkey after receiving training at the Fernand Leger workshop in France. The work was analyzed in three stages according to Panofsky’s work criticism method: natural meaning, conventional meaning and internal meaning. The analysis reveals prominent figures, images, and symbols in Günal's "Grape Harvest" that reflect the culture of the period, the geography and regional culture, and lifestyle, particularly the family structure of Anatolian culture. The work also provides information about the artistic expression of the period in which the painting was created. Other results of the research include the deep and symbolic meanings of the work "Grape Harvest", such as abundance, fertility, unity and togetherness, which have a place in many cultures, and its connections with family and culture.
