Summary/Abstract: Word and body are the fundamental signs that enable the understanding and expression of both the human being and the external world. The fact that body language is the first thing that comes to mind when nonverbal communication is mentioned stems from the body’s role as the primary carrier that facilitates transmission in nonverbal communication. The body occupies an effective and significant place in communication through its functions of accompanying speech and substituting for it. Authors, too, frequently make use of these possibilities of body language while constructing their works. In order to present narrative characters, they resort to non-linguistic signs, primarily the structure of the body, bodily formations, and actions. In literary texts, body language data may appear in various forms, which is a natural consequence of their literary character. One of these uses involves literary devices. Among these, simile holds an important place due to its function and widespread use. In this study, the elements to which the body is likened as a signifier in the context of body language are examined in Yûsuf u Zelîhâ and Süheyl ü Nevbahâr, two masnavis from the 14th-century Old Anatolian Turkish period. Thus, it will be revealed under which signs and types these similes are addressed; specifically, within the framework of “simile,” the use of bodily data in the context of body language through literary devices will be demonstrated.
