INTERVENTION OF FIREFIGHTERS IN EXTREME CONDITIONS

Summary/Abstract: Firefighters’ intervention is one of the most complex and risky activities, because it involves action in hostile environments, with multiple dangers and limited resources. However, there are situations when interventions are carried out under extreme conditions. Extreme conditions involve hostile environments with major risk factors that go beyond the usual intervention situations. These conditions can be: extreme temperatures (heatwave and frost), industrial areas with high risk of explosion or toxic or radioactive atmosphere, areas inaccessible to fire engines (mountain slopes), floods and flash floods, interventions in collapsed buildings or affected by explosions and interventions at height. All of these situations require a different approach to normal interventions, such as: a thorough risk assessment, tailored complex tactics, outstanding physical and mental resilience, additional logistics and support. The success of the missions depends on the speed, coordination and protection of the personnel. For the realization of the article, the professional experience of the author, both the operative officer and the didactic, was used first of all. Then, various bibliographic landmarks, foreign specialty books and web pages were studied.
