CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES FOR MAINTAINING SECURITY AT ROMANIA’S BORDERS IN THE CONTEXT OF ACCESSION TO THE SCHENGEN AREA

Summary/Abstract: The article aims to analyze the cross-border challenges and risks associated with Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area, focusing on cross-border crime, terrorism, illegal migration, and organized crime. The methodology used consists of a qualitative analysis based on case studies and official statistical data, as well as a review of the specialist literature and institutional sources. The results highlight the diversity and specificity of crimes depending on the neighbouring state, as well as the geopolitical impact on risk management. The conclusions emphasize the importance of adopting integrated strategies and increasing international cooperation to strengthen border security. The author’s own interpretation points to the need for an advanced technological control system and a constant exchange of information between European partners in order to respond effectively to new cross-border security challenges.
