ACCORDING TO SİCİLL-İ AHVÂL RECORDS SOME RELATIVES OF TEPEDELENLI ALI PASHA WHO SERVED IN THE OTTOMAN BUREAUCRACY AFTER HIS DEATH

Summary/Abstract: This study examines the process leading to the execution of Tepedelenli Ali Pasha, as well as the reintegration of his relatives into the Ottoman bureaucracy following his execution in 1822. Based on the Sicill-i Ahvâl registers, this research reveals that eight of the Pasha’s relatives served in various capacities within the Ottoman administrative hierarchy, among whom Ferid Pasha of Avlona was honored with the rank of vizier. Seven of these individuals were born in the Rumelia provinces, while one was born in Istanbul. Their common characteristic was that they received an education above the average standards of their time. All were literate and possessed proficiency in several foreign languages, which they spoke with notable fluency. This study also enables us to understand how the Ottoman state evaluated the relatives of Tepedelenli Ali Pashawho rebelled against the Empire in 1821-not by associating them with his offenses, but rather by assessing them within the framework of their own abilities and merit, and thereby assigning them to official positions. Not only did the Ottoman state refrain from categorizing the Tepedelenli lineage as inherently suspect, but the family members themselves also did not adopt a hostile attitude toward the Ottoman administration in the subsequent period. Over time, these individuals succeeded in overcoming the negative image associated with belonging to a rebellious household and secured new positions for themselves within the Ottoman bureaucracy.
