The Sonata Genre in the Works of Vasile Zagorschi: From an Overview of the Genre to an Exegesis of the Sonata for Violin and Piano

Summary/Abstract: The present article investigates the evolution and particularities of the sonata genre within the oeuvre of composer Vasile Zagorschi, an emblematic figure of the musical culture in the Republic of Moldova. The study outlines a portrait of the composer and provides an overview of the master’s five sonatas, highlighting the manner in which they reflect a synthesis between the classical-romantic tradition and the innovative trends of the 20th century. Particular attention is devoted to the structural and stylistic analysis of the Sonata for Violin and Piano (2003), considered the composer's testamentary opus. The authors examine the architectural rigor, the balanced interaction between the two instruments, and the neo-romantic harmonic language, marked by profound philosophical reflection. The methodology employed combines historical-theoretical and morphological analysis, demonstrating the importance of these works in the process of consolidating the national chamber repertoire. The findings reveal that for Vasile Zagorschi, the sonata genre represents a laboratory for conceptual and stylistic experimentation, reflecting the transformations of his musical language from his early works to his late-period creations.
