Summary/Abstract: Despite the theoretical recognition that deafness and heard-of-hearing conditions create foundations for an authentic socio-cultural identity, these individuals continue to face severe communication barriers in mental health care. This paper explores the main challenges in providing psychotherapeutic services to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, as well as opportunities for enhancing therapeutic practice. It is hypothesized that adopting a multicultural perspective and adapting communication strategies directly contribute to establishing a stable therapeutic alliance and achieving more successful treatment outcomes. The literature indicates that the presence of stigmas, client mistrust, therapists’ lack of cultural competence, and the complex dynamics within the therapistinterpreter-deaf client triad significantly impede the therapy process, highlighting the necessity for professional education and adaptation of treatment.
