Summary/Abstract: For a long time, Thietmar has had a bad reputation in Polish medieval studies as a chronicler who hated Bolesław Chrobry. We attempt to show how superficial the premises underlying such an opinion are. Thietmar does not fundamentally dispute Bolesław's high position within the Saxon aristocracy (or his associated dignity), but he often has to judge him as a fierce opponent of the German king, and this is the source of the insults directed at him. The Bishop of Merseburg does not demonise Bolesław, as Helmut Lippelt has already noted, and he does not stigmatise the Polish duke as a „Sclavus”.
