Summary/Abstract: Cultural narratives surrounding dementia, together with the ethical dilemmas involved in its visual representation, are undergoing a transformation. As criticism of stereotypical portrayals of old age becomes increasingly widespread, a new perspective is gaining prominence: one that regards the ageing body as equal rather than abject and characterises dementia not as a loss of identity or a state of being “living dead”, but as an “other-state” in which embodied knowledge can enable interpersonal communication through various non-verbal forms. This study examines how people living with dementia are represented in recent photo series by Bálint Szajki and Balázs Turós, how the photographers’ perspectives shape these representations, and how the presence of the camera raises epistemological questions concerning the understanding of otherness.
