Digital transformation in the Polish agricultural sector

Summary/Abstract: In the face of the growing challenges of climate change, soil degradation, and growing demand for food, digital agriculture is a key element in the transformation of the agricultural sector towards sustainable development. The aim of this article is to present the concept of digital agriculture and identify opportunities for the application of innovative technologies in the agricultural sector. The study highlights current trends and the state of digitalisation of agriculture in Poland, drawing on the results of the ministerial project "Digital Transformation of Agriculture in Poland" and the study "Digital Agriculture in Poland", conducted as part of the Partners for International Business (PIB) "Soil Improvement Poland" project. Attention is paid to the assumptions, goals, and guidelines for digital agriculture systems formulated in declarations and strategic documents. Digital technologies used in agricultural production are illustrated, as well as the benefits resulting from the development of digital agriculture and the barriers hindering the implementation of innovative technologies in the agricultural sector. New technologies enable increased efficiency, cost optimisation, and improved quality of work for farmers. Key actions accelerating the digitalisation process include financial support, education, and the integration of new technologies with existing farm infrastructure. Digitalisation and the implementation of new technologies will therefore be a natural path for agricultural development and a necessary element to ensure not only social well-being but also climate and economic security. The transformation towards digital agriculture is currently one of the most important development challenges facing farms in Poland.
