Summary/Abstract: Currently, there is a global development of local community initiatives involving the construction and operation of renewable energy installations to meet energy needs. Energy communities are initiatives that transform local resources into viable green energy projects. The main goal of the research was to highlight the role of local communities in the energy transition in rural areas of the Wielkopolska voivodeship and identify opportunities for their expansion. In particular, the development of energy cooperatives in the region, in the context of national legal and economic realities and the challenges of European climate and energy policy. This paper presents the concept of energy cooperatives and the benefits that result from the development of local energy initiatives, both for their individual members and the local community. Development opportunities for these entities can be found, among other things, in projects and investment support programs for renewable energy implemented in rural areas. Energy cooperatives represent an innovative and competitive approach to the management of renewable energy sources. They support sustainable development and contribute to achieving climate neutrality. They develop local energy independence while engaging residents, creating (green) jobs and strengthening social capital. The development of distributed energy, exemplified by these communities, increases the attractiveness and competitiveness of the Wielkopolska. The research methods used primarily included literature studies, both domestic and international, on the research topic, as well as analyses of legal acts and reports.
