Summary/Abstract: The article examines the role and significance of religious education in secularised Czech society. Drawing on sociological research on religious affiliation as well as participation in school-based religious education and parish catechesis, the author demonstrates the relatively limited scope of both forms of religious transmission and their regional differentiation. The article argues that religious education in schools cannot fulfil the function of catechesis, understood as initiation into the faith, nor can it compensate for the breakdown of intergenerational religious transmission within the family. The justification for the role and significance of religious education should therefore be sought within the framework of general education, which takes into account the pluralistic and secular context of public schools. From this perspective, the primary value of religious education lies in the development of religious, cultural, moral, social, and interpretative competences. These competences contribute to a more adequate understanding of religion as an essential element of culture, history, and social life.
