Summary/Abstract: The Council of Nicaea (325) defined once and for all the Church’s doctrine concerning the divinity of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God. This act came about as a result of a long and complex theological discussion that lasted almost two centuries. The defenders of orthodoxy had to deal mainly with the Greek philosophical tradition, which, in the face of the mystery of the Incarnation, had to agree to give up some of its established metaphysical principles and beliefs, such as those concerning the figure of the deuteros theos. It is not historically correct to claim that it was natural for Hellenic culture to believe that God became man and that Jesus Christhad a divine nature. The dogma of the divinity of Christ, expressed by the concept of homoousios, is certainly not the result of Greek mentality and therefore does not need to be demythologized, as has been postulated in the 20th century. Although the concept of homoousios is taken from the philosophical tradition, its use is theological in nature, serving to emphasize and strengthen the pure biblical faith.
