Summary/Abstract: This article analyses the academic work of Rev. Prof. Romuald Rak, who focused on the role and evolution of music in the Church’s liturgy. The author traces the history of sacred music, from its synagogue origins to the reforms introduced by the Second Vatican Council. The professor’s critical view of beat music and modern trends, which in his opinion may disrupt the prayerful nature of the celebration, is presented. An important element of the study is the theological and pastoral research concerning the passivity of the faithful and the state of musical education among the clergy and organists. Fr. Rak argued that music should always serve the word, fostering a deeper and more conscious participation in the Eucharist. The whole work emphasises the need for systematic formation and attention to the high artistic quality of singing in parishes.
