Summary/Abstract: Growing evidence indicates that the gut microbiota plays a significant role in cognitive functioning, mental health, and behavior through the bidirectional microbiota–gut–brain axis. Microbial diversity and metabolic activity influence key neurobiological processes, including neurotransmitter synthesis, immune regulation, stress responsiveness, and synaptic plasticity, which are essential for learning, memory, attention, and executive functioning. Alterations in gut microbiota composition have also been linked to emotional dysregulation, stress vulnerability, and psychiatric conditions, which can indirectly affect academic performance. Although direct causal relationships between microbiota and academic outcomes cannot yet be established, converging evidence supports an indirect influence mediated through cognition, mental health, and behavior. These findings highlight the potential of microbiota-informed nutritional and lifestyle strategies as complementary approaches to support cognitive development, mental well-being, and educational outcomes across the lifespan.
